Welcome to my substack. I want to take a few words to put my cards on the table, so you know where I’m coming from. I am an unapologetic political progressive with radical views and pragmatic policy preferences. My intention with this substack is not simply to “preach to the choir,” although I think that’s a perfectly noble vocation. While I’ll be writing from my left-leaning point of view, I’ll be doing my best to follow facts and evidence wherever they lead, and calling out factual and logical mistakes when I see them. In particular, I hope to attend to the way narratives make us vulnerable to believing things without evidence. When an alleged fact fits our preexisting narrative, it is very hard to resist. At the same time, I am not a journalist. I’m not reporting just to report. I want to speak to people who don’t share my politics, but I’m not here to build bridges for the sake of bridges, particularly if that means diluting my values and convictions. I do aim to contribute to a broad-based consensus about how we can make our society better for all of us. Along with occasional writings, I will be posting episodes of a Brave Angels inspired podcast I am part of producing.
